Introduction of department
Introduction of department
  • The Department of Radiation Oncology is one of the methods of clinical medicine that uses radiation to treat tumors with surgery and chemotherapy. Although this department mainly treats malignant tumors, radiation therapy is also performed to cure the tumor or alleviate symptoms such as pain. Although radiation alone is used, in some cases, treatment is performed in combination with surgery and chemotherapy. Besides, it also treats benign tumors and benign diseases.
  • Kyungpook National University Chilgok Hospital Radiation Oncology Center provides the best radiation therapy to patients in need of treatment through a multidisciplinary approach to various tumors. In addition to general radiotherapy, we also provide cutting-edge special treatments such as:
  • 1. Intensity-modulated radiotherapy
This treatment minimizes the radiation dose of surrounding normal tissues by controlling the amount of radiation, that is, “intensity,” for each subdivided area by considering the location of the tumor and surrounding normal tissues, and selectively irradiating the desired radiation dose only to the tumor tissue.
  • 2. Image-guided radiotherapy
This is a method of obtaining an image of the treatment site right before radiation treatment, accurately confirming the lesion's location, performing correction, and then performing radiation treatment to reduce errors during radiation treatment.
  • 3. Respiratory-gated radiotherapy
This is a treatment method that considers the change in the tumor's location that moves according to breathing. When treating a lung or liver tumor, the tumor moves according to breathing. Therefore, this is a method of treatment, taking into account the movement according to breathing. By irradiating radiation only when the tumor is in a specific location, the side effects of normal tissue can be reduced.
  • 4. Real-time tumor tracking system
This is a treatment method by tracking the movement of the tumor according to the breath in real-time.
  • 5. Stereotactic radiosurgery, Stereotactic body radiotherapy
This is a treatment method in which a large amount of radiation is intensively irradiated from multiple directions at once after accurately aligning the area to be treated. This treatment can be divided into stereotactic radiotherapy used for brain tumors, and stereotactic body radiation therapy applied to body lesions other than the brain. Compared to conventional radiation therapy, a substantial amount of radiation is irradiated at a time, so accurate and precise treatment is essential.
  • Currently, Kyungpook National University Chilgok Hospital Radiation Oncology Center has the following treatment equipment.
    • Rapid Arc
    • VERO
    • Vital Beam
