Neurosurgery
Introduction of department
What is Neurosurgery?
It refers to a department that performs surgical treatment for diseases occurring in the nervous system, such as the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. Microsurgery is mainly performed using a microscope, and recently, the field of surgery has been expanded using new technologies such as brain endoscopy, radiation intravascular surgery, and pain treatment.
Neurosurgery field-
1
- Cerebrovascular Surgery
- This field is responsible for diagnosing and treating cerebral infarction, in which cerebral blood vessels are blocked, and cerebral hemorrhage, in which cerebrovascular ruptures. There are many causes of disease, and drug therapy, microsurgery, and intravascular surgery are applied according to each disease and patient's characteristics. Particularly, intravascular surgery is a field that has rapidly developed in recent years and is applied to the treatment of cerebral aneurysms, acute cerebrovascular obstructions, and cerebral arteriovenous malformations.
-
2
- Brain tumor Surgery
- This field is responsible for diagnosing and treating brain tumors and performs microsurgery removal and stereotactic radiosurgery. In recent years, endoscopy technology and gamma knife radiosurgery technology have been introduced, complementing craniotomy's invasiveness to provide adequate brain tumors treatment in elderly patients or patients with poor systemic conditions. Kyungpook National University Chilgok Hospital operates a brain endoscopy clinic to treat pituitary gland diseases and brain tumors with non-invasive surgery. It is the only gamma knife radiation surgery in Daegu and Gyeongbuk
-
3
- Spine Surgery
- This field is responsible for diseases related to the cervical, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae and covers almost all spinal diseases, from disc herniation to spinal cord tumors. It focuses on surgical treatment but combines medication, rehabilitation, and pain treatment.
-
4
- Pediatric Neurosurgery
- This field is responsible for various neurological disorders that occur primarily in newborns, children, and adolescents. There are many congenital diseases in newborns and young children, such as craniofacial anomalies and lumbar spine lipoma, and there are many acquired diseases such as hydrocephalus and brain tumors. Since there are many differences in diagnosis and treatment of diseases between children and adults, a pediatric neurosurgeon specializing in children is needed. In particular, Kyungpook National University Chilgok Hospital was designated by the Ministry of Health and Welfare as a project implementation organization for children's hospitals, and pediatric neurosurgeons treat patients with severe and rare pediatric neurological diseases.
-
5
- Functional neurosurgery
- This field refers to a method of fixing a stereotactic frame on the head, confirming the structure to be treated in the brain by radiographic imaging, and then performing a procedure on the desired target within a geometrically defined three-dimensional space. Recently, due to the development of nervous system imaging technology and computers, frameless stereotactic surgery, in which only a sensor (fiducial marker) is attached to the patient's head without using stereotactic devices, and operated with the help of a navigation system while viewing images directly in the operating room, has also been used. The Department of Neurosurgery at Kyungpook National University Chilgok Hospital is the only one in Daegu & Gyeongbuk area to perform deep brain stimulation device insertion and stereotactic gamma knife radiation surgery for Parkinson's disease patients.

-
1) Cerebral endoscopic surgery
- Pituitary adenoma
- Craniocephaly
- Turkish nodular meningioma
- Intraventricular tumor
- Obstructive hydrocephalus
-
2) Lumboperitoneal shunt for elderly patients with hydrocephalus (treatable dementia)
- Unlike conventional ventricular abdominal shunts, it does not go through the brain, and in some cases, hydrocephalus can be operated under local anesthesia.
-
3) Deep brain stimulation
- For Parkinson's disease, a multidisciplinary treatment team that includes neurology, neurosurgery, and neuroradiology conducts surgery and post-surgery treatment.
- 4) Endoscopic spine surgery
